Although they don’t have the rip-roaring performance of their earlier siblings, the mid-1970s third-generation Corvettes (“C3s”) have become popular choices lately. Combining the C3’s iconic styling with a rumbling V8, the open-air capability of the T-top roof and a considerably more affordable price tag, a mid-1970s C3 offers a lot of bang for the buck. Here we have a 1973 Corvette which is unique among the C3 lineage. A ’73 is very easy to spot as that was the last year for a chrome bumper (on the back) and the first year for the color-matched, integrated flexible bumper (in front). This one has the optional L-82 version of the 350 V8 that cranked out 60 more horsepower than the base L48 350. And it’s matched to a four-speed manual transmission, which pumps up the fun factor considerably. This car also boasts just 32,245 original miles and in addition to its original powertrain boasts all original body panels minus the front bumper (which was cracked so we professionally replaced it). Interesting background story is that the original buyer ordered a yellow car and for some reason the dealership got one in his specification (base car with high-performance powertrain) but in the wrong color (it was Dark Blue). As a car with this specification wasn’t easy to find (L-82s were usually loaded with A/C, p/w, etc) the dealership had their body shop professionally repaint the brand-new Corvette in Yellow. There are a few imperfections you’ll see up close, such as a few touched-up scratches and minor checking of the original lacquer paint, but overall, it presents as a very nice driver, especially for a car that’s nearly 50 years old. Underneath it is solid and looks as good as you’d expect of a well-kept, low-mileage Corvette. The interior looks great with the original upholstery, carpeting and door panels in fine shape. As stated earlier, this Corvette was ordered with performance, not luxury, in mind so you won’t find power windows or air conditioning in the cockpit. The factory engine specification plaque indicating the 9:1 compression sits in front of the shifter, and along with the 6,000 rpm redline on the tachometer stands as a reminder that this car was ordered with the high-performance L-82. Fire it up and run through the gears and you’ll find this Corvette a blast to drive with strong and even acceleration and a smooth action to the clutch and shifter. In addition to the satisfying pull provided by that powertrain, the ‘vette also steers sharply and brakes smoothly. There’s no wander as you cruise down the highway and for a C3 this car takes the bumps well in stride.
