For many muscle car enthusiasts, the 1970 Chevelle SS checks all the boxes. The subtly bulging fenders and hood, semi-fastback roofline and simple but handsome grille and taillights just look so right. And with no less than 350 horsepower coming standard for the SS 396 with the option of even more, these Chevelles made the right sounds and responded swiftly to a right foot. Here we have a 1970 Chevelle SS 396 that turns heads as easily as it presses them back into the seats. This car has had just one caring owner for the last 45 years (since 1979) and a laminated copy of the build sheet is included. The all original rock-solid body panels are arrow straight and sport an older but very high-quality respray in Cranberry Red that’s properly accented with black SS stripes and the correct factory sport wheels wrapped with Cooper Cobra radials. The similarly solid underside is also original and in good condition. While the original bumpers show a bit of hazing they are presentable overall. New exterior door handles and driver's sideview mirror keep it looking fresh. Overall, this SS strikes us as a very nice driver with good bones. The optional bucket seats and console (complete with staple shifter) highlight the interior features. From the headliner down to the carpet this nearly all original interior looks great. The front seats were completely reupholstered, including new foam cushions and seatback trim. An aftermarket Yamaha AM/FM/Cassette audio system is ready to play those Van Halen and Lynyrd Skynyrd tapes. Under the hood is an early-'70s NOM 402 V8 (as you likely know, 1970 saw the 396 grow to 402 cubes, but the iconic "SS 396" designation remained). It starts and runs great while a set of headers and a free-flowing dual exhaust system provide a proper rocking soundtrack. All that power runs through a TH400 automatic transmission that was just serviced (new module and fully resealed). Note that the Chevelle now sports a non-original 12-bolt Positraction rear end fitted with a 3.73 gear for added performance, but the original 12-bolt rear with the factory-issued 3.31 gear is included with the car. Along with the thrilling performance provided by that powerhouse, the Chevelle shifts smoothly and, thanks to power steering and power front disc brakes, handles and brakes very well. To say this car is fun to drive would be a massive understatement. This sharp, turn-key classic can be fully enjoyed as is or given some detailing (such as engine compartment) to easily take it to the next level.
