For many muscle car enthusiasts, the 1968-69 Chevelle SS has it all. The shark nose front end profile, the bulging rear quarters and upswept rear quarter windows all give the muscle-bound vibe, while those massive valve covers under the hood back up the Chevelle’s powerful presence. Offered here is a largely original and real “138” (the first three numbers of the VIN that indicate a genuine SS 396) Chevelle SS. Built in Atlanta, GA, this SS was originally Ermine white and was painted Matador red in 1986. It has since been freshly repainted in Matador red which is nicely complemented by the original black vinyl top as well as the lower, factory-style black accent paint and t sharp 14-inch Rally wheels wearing BF Goodrich T/As. The glass and various chrome/stainless trim are all original apart from the windshield and are in fair to very good condition. Underneath, the Chevelle is very solid and original. Overall, the SS presents as a very nice driver quality example. Inside, this SS features the optional “Strato” buckets and console, the latter having the cool “horseshoe” (or “staple”) shifter for the TH400 automatic transmission. The upholstery is in fine shape; the front seats may have been reupholstered and if so, it’s a very high-quality job as the color and style match the rear seat well. The original door panels and dash top are in good shape while the console has a small crack line, the headliner has a small seam tear and the carpet could use replacement. Original big block power resides under the hood. Specifically, the base 396 rated at a stout 325 horsepower. The TH400 automatic and it sends the considerable thrust to the 12-bolt Positraction rear end. Power steering, manual brakes. The car starts, runs and drives very well, though we’d probably replace the exhaust with a larger diameter system finished off with the oval,1969-style chrome tips. This genuine Chevelle SS 396 with "good bones" can be thoroughly enjoyed as is or taken to the next level with some cosmetic restoration and freshening.
