As the successor to MG's popular TC model, the MG TD retained the classic lines of its forebear while incorporating notable improvements including a stiffer frame, the adoption of rack and pinion steering and vastly updated front and rear suspension. All this provided much improved handling and ride characteristics over the TC. The engine was still the 1250cc (1.3-liter) four that produced around 54 horsepower, enough to send this lightweight sports car down the road with some pep in its step. The handsome 1951 MG TD on offer here must be seen to be fully appreciated. A painstaking, frame-off restoration was performed during the early 1990s and the car has been barely driven but very well preserved since. As such, it still presents and drives as if it were much more recently restored. Both the metal and wooden components of the MG’s frame and body are rock solid and the car wears a gorgeous color scheme of silver and dark gray. The glass is original and still in fine shape, while some of the various chrome parts, such as the radiator, windshield frame and headlight housings were re-chromed as needed. Other exterior restoration included new hub caps and a new canvas top. The interior is similarly impressive, with a refurbished wooden dash and instruments as well as all new upholstery done in a dark red that beautifully complements the silver/gray exterior. Moss Motors and Abingdon Spares were extensively used to source parts during the MG’s restoration. Under the bonnet it is so clean you could serve tea and crumpets off the engine’s valve cover. The car’s mechanical and electrical systems were gone through and components, such as the wiring harness, were refurbished and replaced as needed. That sprightly inline four runs smoothly, while shifting gears through the 4-speed stick adds to the fun of zipping around in this sharp, old-school roadster. The period-correct raccoon tail accessory is included. With its upright chrome grille, separate bullet headlights, elegantly sweeping fenders, cut-down doors and "Banjo" steering wheel, this 1951 MG TD looks like it rolled out of the automotive golden age of the 1930s. Yet with the updates the TD received over the TC, it drives more like a modern car than its classic looks might suggest. Well sorted and ready to enjoy, this MG TD is a joy to drive and is ready to take you on a sporting trip back in time.
